Building Networks and Strength: Andrew Johnson's Dual Journey

Building Networks and Strength: Andrew Johnson's Dual Journey

Hi, I’m Andrew Johnson, a recent graduate from BT’s Degree Apprenticeship scheme, where I specialised as a DevOps Engineer at Adastral Park. My journey wasn’t a straight path, but it was one filled with invaluable lessons, resilience, and growth—a story I hope will inspire you if you’re just starting out.

The Journey Begins: From Uncertainty to Discovery

After Sixth Form, I had no clear direction. I decided to take a gap year, working at Tesco and spending my free time gaming. It felt like a year wasted. I was unmotivated, aimless, and unsure of my next step. Like many others, I followed the conventional advice and enrolled in university, studying Business Management. Yet, deep down, I knew it wasn’t the right path for me.

University came with challenges I hadn’t anticipated. The environment wasn’t what I needed. I was picking up bad habits, and the debt weighed heavily on my mind. It wasn’t fulfilling, and more importantly you get what you put in; I craved something practical, something real. I wanted to work in technology and build a professional lifestyle, but I didn’t know where to start.

Then, a turning point came. A friend handed me a leaflet about BT’s Degree Apprenticeship program. It offered exactly what I needed: hands-on tech experience, a structured learning environment, and financial independence. It was a leap of faith, but one that would shape my future.

Stepping Into the Unknown: The BT Apprenticeship

Joining BT as an apprentice was daunting but exhilarating. In my first three months, I had the amazing opportunity to volunteer to assist during Princess Anne’s visit to Adastral Park in 2019. It was more than just an event; it was a defining moment. Meeting industry professionals and witnessing the vibrant community within BT opened my eyes to the endless opportunities in apprenticeships.

The apprenticeship was challenging but rewarding. I worked on real-world projects, applying what I learned in the classroom directly to my role. By the end of the program, I had earned a 1st class degree in Network Engineering and even received an academic award. It wasn’t just about the credentials; it was about the growth, the skills, and the connections I made along the way.

Pushing Limits: Physical Growth and Mental Strength

Amidst my professional journey, I sought to challenge myself physically. I set ambitious fitness goals that pushed me beyond my comfort zone and strengthened my mental resilience. From competing in a strongman competition and participating in a professional photoshoot to stepping on stage for a bodybuilding competition, these experiences were transformative. One of my proudest achievements was earning a spot in the British Men’s Physique finals.

These milestones taught me discipline, perseverance, and the importance of setting tangible goals. The mental toughness I developed in the gym carried over into every aspect of my life, enhancing my focus and determination in my career.

Balancing Passion and Profession

One of the most transformative aspects of the apprenticeship was the financial stability it provided. With a steady income and structured routine, I was able to invest in myself. I pursued my passion for health and fitness, ultimately competing as a British Men’s Physique finalist. This wouldn’t have been possible without the discipline and time management skills I developed through the apprenticeship.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Like many, I faced challenges during the COVID-19 lockdown. My mental health and fitness took a hit, and I found myself at a low point. Seeking help was the first step to recovery. I spoke openly with my managers, who supported me in finding balance. This experience taught me the importance of resilience and reaching out when you’re struggling. We all face challenges, but how we respond defines our growth.

Lessons Learned and Advice for You

Looking back, here are some key lessons I’ve learned that I hope will help you as you start your own journey:

  1. Trust Your Instincts: Follow your own voice, not what others expect of you. It’s your life, and you’re the one who will live it.
  2. Embrace the Apprentice Title: As an apprentice, you have the freedom to ask questions and learn without judgment. Use this opportunity to soak up knowledge and gain experience.
  3. Recognise the Signs of Burnout: Pay attention to your mental and physical health. Take breaks, disconnect from social media, and prioritise self-care when needed.
  4. Seize Opportunities: Whether it’s volunteering for a project, attending an event, or networking, make the most of what’s in front of you. These moments can shape your career in unexpected ways.
  5. Be Open About Challenges: Ego can hold you back. Don’t be afraid to admit when you need help. Your managers and mentors are there to support you.
  6. Focus on What Matters: Prioritise your time and energy on activities that align with your goals. Success isn’t about doing everything but doing the right things well.

Reflections and the Road Ahead

Choosing the BT Degree Apprenticeship over a traditional university degree was the best decision I ever made. It gave me not just academic credentials but also real-world experience, a professional network, and the confidence to pursue my passions. It was a springboard for both personal and professional growth.

To those still figuring out their next steps: don’t be afraid to take the road less travelled. Whether it’s an apprenticeship, an entry-level job, or another hands-on opportunity, what matters most is finding a path that aligns with your goals and values. Be resilient, stay curious, and invest in yourself. The journey won’t always be easy, but it will be worth it.
